We are overwhelmed by all the messages of support we have received from both near and far – it is kind of everyone to give us your support and ‘condolences’ – it means a lot to us as we struggle to understand what has happened. Thank you all. Also a big thanks to all our booking suppliers, guests and local hotels and guesthouses who have been so understanding and co-operative as we try to find alternative accommodation for all our Galenia forward bookings.
The grim reality is that in these ‘tinder dry’ conditions, bush fires are a distinct possibility and with the winds of the Western Cape they travel with such amazing speed that there is very little that can be done. This fire started behind Montagu and the prevailing winds blew it eastwards across our neighbouring fruit farms and on to the slopes of the Langebergs which form the Twistniet Nature reserve behind the estate. Unfortunately our fire breaks, which we have recently doubled in size, could not stop it.
On the positive side we have now had our power restored and are renewing and repairing the water supply where some pipes melted in the intense heat – but there is no denying the fact that the estate and all its fynbos and renosterbos has undergone a severe burning as you can see from this aerial picture taken this morning.
